# What is the runtime directory ?

The runtime directory is the directory where all runtime data is stored.

For example, the [sessions](session "session")

## Default value

By default, it's the *.aitm* directory located in:

* the closest git project from the working directory if found
* otherwise under the *$HOME* directory

## Environment

The runtime directory may be set via the *AITM_RUNTIME_DIR* [environment variable](env "env").
